With just two days until our repatriation journey begins hubby and I are just waiting for the next phase of our life to begin. And stressing a little (okay, maybe a lot) about our dogs flying all the way to Australia!
But with that limbo waiting period comes a renewed interest in planning the layout for my Australian sewing studio. A few months ago I did graphics of three possible layouts including a floorplan and wall decor plans. This is the one I've decided suits my style and usage needs the best:
I have focused mainly on functionality and prioritized a few things:
- Sewing station
- Cutting station
- Design wall
- Pressing bench (it's on wheels so easily moved)
- Storage for my vintage sewing machines and fabric
- Displaying my published quilt books
- Organizational wall decor (thread holders, whiteboard, clipboard holder)
And then I was keen to have a way to hang wall quilts that enabled me to easily swap them out whenever I want to. In our old house I hung a twine clothesline below our mantle (see pic below) and loved it, so I'm planning to do the same thing under my book rail with space for at least 3 wall/mini quilts.

I know I want to hang my CUT wall quilt there and will choose a couple of others when I'm unpacking or purpose make some cute sewing themed ones.
And my sewing machine themed thread holders are terrific thread storage and look cute so the four of them will hang beside the window so they are right near the sewing station which was very handy in my old studio.

So I think I've achieved a plan that will ensure my space works well. It's a much smaller space than I had in Colorado so it's vital I prioritize functionality but I also want it to be aesthetically pleasing so I enjoy being in there.
I'm minimizing wall decor in this studio because the house is double brick and the walls are cement rendered so I don't want to put too many big holes in these walls, most of the wall decor will hang on simple purpose designed hammer in hooks, so we should only need to drill holes for the book rail and design wall.
Stay tuned to see this come to life during quarter one of 2023!
