Cutting Station

I love my custom cutting table!
We bought the height adjustable legs from IKEA and the wood tabletop from Bunnings (Aussie Home Depot or Lowes equivalent). It fits Ikea Raskog carts under it which is handy since I had two of them.
Two important factors for a cutting station:
  1. Height - you don't want to be bent over for hours! I used to use a folding 6ft table from the hardware store on bed risers, it worked extremely well and is a great inexpensive option, but was too big once I moved into my smaller studio when we repatriated to Australia.
  2. Anti Fatigue mats underfoot can help prevent back pain
4 things to have handy; rotary cutters, rotary cutter blades, scissors, quilt rulers in various sizes.

4 Favourite Rulers

1. One of my favorite rulers is this little one that is only 6" x 2.5" it is soooo lightweight & handy!
2. The ruler I use the most is this yellow one that is 15" x 5"
3. My perfect points ruler (I sell these at trunk shows) is also invaluable for complex FPP!
4. A fairly standard 6" x 24" quilting ruler for cutting from yardage is a necessity for sure.

Take a break often if you are cutting fabric for a whole quilt!
Here's a handy yoga stretch to help ease upper back and shoulder tension whilst cutting.
Note: my knees are slightly bent.
Feet hip distance apart. Reach back and grasp hands or use a yoga strap if your hands can't reach each other. Then inhale and with soft knees forward fold as you exhale. Hold for several seconds.
Repeat 3 to 5 times.
I have a free printable tutorial for making a yoga strap if you need one.
