Sewing Studio Organization - Pressing Station

Years ago as a new quilter I used to use a traditional folding ironing board but gosh it is annoying when pressing a basted quilt!

So, whilst living in Colorado hubby used a spare Ikea cube unit we had to create my perfect dream pressing station.

Four things to keep in mind if you want to do this:
  1. I highly recommend high quality castors (mine were from Ikea and are excellent)
  2. These cube units are now made partially hollow so I recommend bolting the top to the unit not just screwing it in
  3. The top needs to overhang the base unit so you can staple gun on some batting and fabric to cover it.
  4. I highly recommend using thermal batting so it will reflect heat back rather than just absorb it.
Another tip I have is to have two irons, one cordless and one corded. Each type have their benefits. My corded iron was from a thrift store and only cost $10.
I prefer to have a water spray bottle on hand rather than add water to the iron, I usually add a little heavy spray starch to the water so it is about one part starch to four parts water! I also keep plenty of spray starch on hand, you just can't beat starched fabric, I love it!
Every facet of your sewing equipment is important and if you invest in it believe me it will be worth it! The most mundane of quilty tasks can be made easier/better with the right tools, organisation and effort.
